As you may have noticed, it's town meeting season in the New England states. Consider this an open thread to air your views on local democracy- plusses and minuses.
In MY town? Plusses: you have the power to uninforcibly ban words such as "nigger" from your city. Minuses: you can uninforcibly ban words like "nigger" from your city. In other words, much the same touble as from other, larger forms of democracy.
As a former New Englander, I feel my town meeting should have at least one elderly man who gets up and talks for a good 40 minutes about how the way things used to be and how we shouldn't spend money on anything. Ever.
However, I've found that New York City has a similar group that is both often helpful and also a pain in the ass. They're called community boards, and they don't like anyone building anything. Ever.
