Israel to nuke Iran! ..shhh..don't tell anybody though..

I opened up Drudge this morning and what is it that I see? A headline bigger than my arm saying Israel has secret plans to nuke Iran before Iran nukes Israel. At least they were secret plans before this morning.

Now I'm all for freedom of the press, but this story shouldn't have happened. What point does it serve other than to inflame an already tense situation? Iran could easily read this and decide to launch a preemptive strike before Israel's preemptive strike.

I'm not saying the press should be outright censored (even though it should be), but editors should have some sense of what they're putting out there and what effect it will end up having on the readers. Running a scoop on Paris Hilton is one thing, running one on secret plans for nuclear attacks is another.

I look forward to you disagreeing. That's your cue Shawn..

Fine, I'm predictable. I can live with that.

If you start censoring one story what's to stop you from censoring anything you don't like? Who decides what to censor? Perhaps a public organization devoted to the greater good? Those things always end well.

Publishing that story was maybe irresponsible, but they did have the right to publish it. Someone else would have found out eventually anyway.

Ummm..how is it that you're all for freedom of the press, but think the press should be censored outright?
Could you explain that a bit?

I agree with both those people above. Also, the idea that Israel and Iran have come up with plans to nuke each other (but aren’t going to act on it… just yet), is well, not really that shocking. Or secretive. In fact, I’m pretty sure that particular breaking headline was something both governments have known for a long time.

Of course, I didn’t actually read the Drudge Report, so I could be wrong, but that seems like a ‘well, duh’ story.

It would actually be odd if each government didn't have contingency plans to attack the other. I'm sure we have plans drawn up in case Ghana gets nuclear weapons!

What is a bit odd is that they were leaked. That's very unlike Israel, which usually denies everything. If the leak was intentional, does it mean they think Iran is far enough away from nuclear capability that they can use the threat as a deterrent without getting it thrown back at them?

The worst-case scenario would be if Iran is close to nuclear weapons, and a rogue Israeli leaked the documents as a last-ditch effort. That, I suspect, would only lead to more brinksmanship. Ah, life in the Middle East...
