Giuliani '08

The other night my parents went to the Littleton Area Chamber of Commerce annual dinner. The featured speaker was Giuliani. A well-known politician in New Hampshire a year before the primary? You know what that means!

I've got little to say about it now, but soon I'll offer up my thoughts on a possible Giuliani candidacy. In the meantime, feel free to give me your thoughts on the man.

I think a Giuliani presidency would be disasterous. Unfortunately, I think he may have a chance at getting nominated simply because voters equate him with good leadership during 9/11. And it's true, he is good in a crisis. However, having lived in New York prior to then, I could tell you a few things. For instance, if you’re looking for a candidate who has traditionally Republican values - small government, isn’t looking to turn the executive branch into a dictatorship – yeah, he’d pretty much do the opposite. Also, he doesn’t compromise very well, and he’s not really good with the diplomacy. I think he might have gotten worse since he left the mayor’s office as well. I saw an inteview with him at the last RNC where he basically said that the world was black and white, and anyone who saw gray areas were fooling themselves.

Yes, I realize it’s a little hypocritical for me to say this given that he did do a lot to make New York safer, which lead to people like me going to school here. He’s not totally a bad guy, and there’s a part of me that realizes that you kind of have to be an asshole to stand up to the unions and to Albany and get anything done in New York. However, I feel there might be a way to do it that doesn’t, well, run up the city deficit, cause widespread corruption in the police department, and benefits Manhattanites while screwing over poorer residents who live in the boroughs.

Also, Giuliani decided to let his wife (and kids) know that he was divorcing her by holding a press conference. Real prince, that one. Sadly, I think the photos of him in drag will do worse to damage his ‘values’ amongst conservatives than the divorce press conference. It’s an odd world we live in.

yes, considering the divorce situation, I think that'll largely torpedo his Republican nomination. It kind of exposes kind of guy he is. Then, the issue why I don't like him. Much like Gov. Spitzer after him, Guliani made a name for himself by grabbing bigwigs from theiy offices, dragging them out in cuffs for the cameras, getting them fired from their jobs and generally ruining their lives while AG, but not actually having evidence of much. Therefore he dropped the case against most of the high profile people he arrested. Because he had nothing, yet ruined their lives. Great guy, Rudi.
