Gun Laws

Eugene Volokh has put together a very short compendium on the right to bear arms in the state governments. It can be found here.

What's very interesting to me is not only that 44 state constitutions have provisions similar to the federal Second Amendment, but that the protections vary in scope. Some states grant the individual citizen an unambiguous right to firearms, whereas others grant the right but with certain provisos. Six states grant no official rights whatsoever: California, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York. Take from that what you will.

FWIW - I'm a second amendment fan, but I'm excedingly happy that my city forbids guns. Take from THAT what you will.

I'm not surprised about NY; but it really IS a shame. Fortunately, the felony rate in NYC itself is pretty low right now, but a) that could change any time, and b) what about other cities, which are not nearly as safe?

Well, technically you could get a gun if you wanted, Cato, you'd just have to get a background check and take a course to make sure you know how to use it. And frankly, I see nothing wrong with requiring those things to purchase deadly firearms.

Not that I think guns = violence, but they certainly don't help

In that vein, I urge everyone to check out this link. It posits a correlation between increased gun ownership and fewer crimes of property:

"The simple fact is that people don't break into houses in America because there is a very real risk that they could be shot by the owner. It's really that simple. Remove that possibility, and property crimes sky-rocket.

Additionally, Americans are always shocked at the amount of assault that goes on in England compared to America. The reason why America has so few assaults compared to England is because America has so many murders. Simply starting a fight in America... like breaking into a house... can have consequences that go beyond a slap on the wrist from the local magistrate."
