Menage a Blah

Beaten but not accepting defeat, Lieberman vows he will run as an Independent. Will a three-way race guarantee a minority Republican U.S. Senator in Connecticut? I ask, you decide.

Well, Alan Schlesinger is a public gambling addict who refuses to step down, even though the RNC refuses to back him, so his race is still a lost cause. I bet he'll hold steady at about 8%, but he'll be biting out of Lieberman's piece of pie there, so that's not chump change either. Meanwhile, I imagine Lieberman will see a huge downward swing in Joementum from his left, seeing as he's abandoned the party now. (I wrote Sen. Reid last night to ask that Joe be stripped of any and all committee assignments.)

So the general will end up as Lamont-Lieberman II, but with Schlesinger's presence largely determining the outcome (Lieberman polls much better with Republicans than Democrats) Lieberman's big-name party suppporters in the primary are already pulling away from him to endorse Lamont. I predict a Lamont victory, but I'm optimistic for a Lieberman-free Senate, so take that as you will.
