I can't tell if I'm just unfamiliar with Sullivan's style or with satire in general, but what exactly was his point here? That we would have been attacked in any case, sooner or later? That whoever was in power would be lambasted by their political opponents as unfit to handle the situation? That a simultaneous assault on Tel Aviv, Moscow and London would have brought a greater amount of international support behind Israel? All three?
Seriously, all it did was confuse me. That makes me feel dumb. I'm not sure I like you, Andrew Sullivan.
I have to agree, it was a pointless exercise in what could have been. It almost reads like he's saying we should be happy that 9/11 happened and with how its aftermath and the war have been handled, that no matter how bad things are they could be worse. If he has another point he's done a good job of hiding it.
