Update on China and Internet Censorship:

Apparently some members of Congress think Google and Yahoo's internet dealing with China are a bit
suspect and will be holding a hearing today regarding it. Kudos to several Opti-mates for highlighting this as a potential issue before it gained prominence in the newsmedia!

On my drive home this evening, I was listening to NHPR.
They had two people trying to Google Search and Yahoo Search, one in Beijing and one in-studio in America.
Not surprisingly, controversial searches (like names of dissident groups) were easy to perform in the U.S., but got responses like "document contains no data" from the Chinese search.
The cost of doing business in a dictatorship, I guess...

Well, if we're going to define the Internet as a public good (and therefore in the public square), I understand why Congress would want decency standards, in the same way that broadcast television doesn't show pornography pace FCC rules. The real question is whether or not any of this is really a violation of the First Amendment.
