It's not the duration of posts that is an issue, its the relative prominence of active threads. Is there some option to add an "active posts" section to the sidebar, so that people could immediately see which posts (however far back their initial creation date) had been recently commented on? As it is, I find myself just sort of taking a mental tally of the number of comments on various posts and then checking when the number stikes me as different than it was the day before. Not ideal I'm sure you'll agree.
